The DYMO LabelWriter 550 is a direct thermal printer that does not require costly inks or toner to print high-quality text and barcodes, while its compact design allows it to fit seamlessly into any workspace. Its patented automatic label recognition technology will automatically identify label size and type, allowing it to quickly generate the template once you load the labels, so you never have to waste time selecting the right template. In addition, the automatic label counter indicates how many labels remain—so you’ll never run out unexpectedly. Free DYMO Connect software is included with every printer, allowing you to create 1D and 2D barcodes along with crisp, clear text and graphics. The 550 is up to 20% faster than its predecessor, the LabelWriter 450, and is fully compatible with our LWCS-class of cryogenic labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, the DYMO LabelWriter 550 is a direct thermal printer and, as such, does not require an ink ribbon or any other source of ink to print. Please contact our technical support team with any questions you may have.

This printer requires specially treated direct thermal labels with a notch and a black mark, designed to be compatible with DYMO printers. We recommend our LWCS-class labels to ensure full compatibility and quality. Other label brands may not work properly with your printer.

The DYMO Connect software for desktops is included with the purchase of this printer. It’s compatible with Windows 8.1 (or later) and Mac 10.14 (or later).

LabelWriter printers are designed to print 2 million inches of thermal labels, which equals more than 500,000 Standard Address labels. Please note that to keep your LabelWriter printer in good condition, we recommend using only DYMO-authentic labels and performing regular printer maintenance.

 

Pull apart the spool; the part of the spool with the spindle should be in your left hand. With your right hand, pick up the roll of labels and place it near the spool. Carefully slide the roll of labels on the spool, following the white arrow. Push the roll of labels firmly on the spool so that the notches on the base of the spool enter the cardboard core of the labels. There should be no gap between the base of the spool and the roll of labels. With your right hand, pick up the other piece of the spool. Carefully slide it down the spindle. Ensure that the notches enter the cardboard core of the labels. The spool should be clamped down tightly on the roll of labels. Place the spool in the LabelWriter. Ensure the labels are justified left.

There are several possible reasons for this:

  • There are no labels inserted
  • The labels are not inserted correctly
  • The labels are inserted but not left-justified
  • There is dust or a piece of a label blocking the sensor
  • The labels you are using do not have the index marks (oval perforations) properly cut out between each pair of labels
  • You are not using DYMO-Authentic labels
  • The photo sensor that reads the index mark has failed,

Plug the Ethernet cable into the right side of the print server. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into an available Ethernet connection. Plug the USB cable from your LabelWriter printer into the right side of the print server. Make sure that the USB cable is connected to your printer and that your printer is plugged in. Plug the print server power adapter into the left side of the print server. Plug the other end of the power adapter into a power outlet.
